  39. Actually, SNOBOL way predates the VAX and even the PDP 11.  My first
  40. encounter with SNOBOL was on the IBM 7040/7094 DCS at UC Berkeley around
  41. 1966.  If I recall correctly, the interpreter was actually written as
  42. macros.  To port it to a new machine you needed a macro assembler and
  43. you needed to define each of the macros to do the proper thing.  Some
  44. friends of mine were working on a CDC 6400 implementation at the time.
